Durfee Hill Management Area
Reference Map:

Topographical Map:

Location and Access
Durfee Hill Management Area is comprised of four parcels of land all
located within the town of Glocester, RI. The western parcel borders
Connecticut with main access at the check station on Reynolds Road
(part of RI Route 94). The eastern and largest parcel is located south
of Route 44 and along Durfee Hill Road. Durfee Hill Road is open for
its entire length with state land occurring on both sides for
approximately 1.5 miles south of Route 44. Topographic quad maps for
Thompson, CT and Chepachet, RI cover these areas.
Habitat
Durfee Hill covers a total land area of 1176 acres. The area is
composed of Primarily forest land (deciduous 726 acres, evergreen 201
acres), with wetlands (209 acres) and agricultural land (29 acres)
accounting for the balance. The DFW maintains a series of wildlife
farming fields and food plots to add diversity to the area and to
provide food and cover for both game and non-game wildlife. A wildlife
marsh covering approximately 16 acres in area occurs in the western
section below the check station along Reynolds Road. A second, larger
impoundment, Burlingame Reservoir, contains both open water and
emergent wetlands and is an excellent producer of local wood ducks.
Wildlife
Durfee Hill supports a wide variety of both game and non-game species
of wildlife. Game mammals found within the area include cottontail
rabbits, snowshoe hare, grey squirrel, white-tailed deer and
furbearers such as fox, raccoon, muskrat and coyote. Game birds found
in the Durfee Hill area include ruffed grouse, wild turkey,
ring-necked pheasant, woodcock and waterfowl. Diverse local habitats
in the area also support abundant populations of non-game wildlife
with ample opportunity for observation of these species available.
